Recent work in the field of GIS is focused on video tracking in urban environments, and this type of tracking relies on a clear understanding of the terrain and its true attributes to predict the path of a target.
To provide this level of detail, Numerica is using novel adaptations of Fourier analysis to create highly compact representations of digital elevation data with rigorous error control that can be efficiently decompressed and used in hardware-constrained environments.
The result of this research is the development of a new GIS Encoder product that will use state-of-the-art compression techniques to create data capable of being streamed wirelessly to mobile platforms and PDAs, placing accurate 3-D map data in the palm of your hand without local device memory constraints.
